VIVIENNE TAN SUPPORTERS HOLD PROTEST RALLY AGAINST SAN ANTONIO OFFICIALS

Chairman Berroya accused of political harassment
More than five hundred supporters of independent candidate for congresswoman of the first district of Quezon City Vivienne Tan held a protest rally against the barangay officials of San Antonio for what they call political harassment.
Wearing purple, Tan’s official campaign color, hundreds of supporters stormed the barangay hall today in time for the weekly flag ceremony. Tan’s group accused Barangay Chairman Ernesto Berroya and his council members of grave abuse of authority. The incidents cited include stopping a Tan-sponsored basketball league in the middle of a game, dismantling the basketball court that bears Tan’s logo, telling residents that anyone who wears purple will be punished accordingly, not giving permit to any Tan-sponsored event, and even verbally abusing anyone who is a known supporter of Tan and Tita Flor Santos who is running for councilor. Berroya is a known ally of incumbent congressman Bingbong Crisologo, Tan’s main opponent in the race.
“This is the worst political harassment I have seen in District 1. These people don’t play fair. It is time for them to know that we are not afraid of them”, said Janet Moralina, Tan’s barangay coordinator in San Antonio.
“I am very proud that my supporters have expressed their disgust over BIngbong’s brand of traditional politics. It is time for people to realize that instilling fear does not work anymore. Enough is enough. I challenge him to control his supporters and for him to play fair. Let the people decide freely”, Vivienne Tan said in her official statement.
Chairman Berroya refused to face the crowd and left the barangay hall while the rally was going on.

Quezon City court rules congressional bet a Filipino
MANILA, Philippines – A Quezon City regional trial court (RTC), reversing an earlier decision by another court, has ruled that congressional candidate Vivienne Tan, a daughter of businessman Lucio Tan, is a Filipino citizen and her name should not be stricken from the voter’s list.
In an order dated Feb. 9, RTC Branch 95 Judge Henri Jean-Paul Inting set aside the ruling made by the Metropolitan Trial Court (MTC) Branch 14 last January.
“A new one (decision) is rendered dismissing the petition for exclusion of a voter (Tan) from the list for lack of merit,” Inting said.
Tan’s opponent, incumbent District 1 Rep. Vincent Crisologo, filed the petition before the MTC.“The RTC is a higher court. Its decision will prevail,” one of Tan’s lawyers, Trixie Angeles, said during a press conference. She said they appealed the MTC decision favoring Crisologo, who claimed that Tan was not a Filipino citizen and should be excluded from the voter’s list in Barangay Sto. Domingo. Tan, who became a United States citizen in 1993, took an oath of allegiance to the Philippines on Nov. 30, 2009, then filed her certificate of candidacy the next day. She took the oath to reacquire her citizenship under Republic Act 9225, the law on dual citizenship.
“Tan having re-acquired her Filipino citizenship under RA 9225, she is deemed not to have lost her Filipino citizenship and is, therefore, a valid registered voter. In short, whatever defects respondent-appellant Vivienne Tan had in her nationality when she registered as a voter should now be deemed cured by her re-acquisition of her Filipino citizenship under RA 9225,” Inting said.
Tan said she considers the new court decision a “personal victory” that she said “affirmed that I am fully qualified to represent the people of District 1.”The court case is separate from a disqualification case also filed against Tan before the Commission on Elections, also questioning her citizenship.

Statement of BGen Danny Lim on the reversal of the Comelec order of disqualification

Friends. I knew that entering into this fight would not be easy. I did not suffer any illusions that there would be no opposition to my candidacy. But I have laid my trust in the system and in the Law, and on this day, we can see that we have trusted well.
Even as we have hurdled this one obstacle, we have yet a long way to go to achieve the dream of serving this country. The problems facing us still remain. I still do not have very much resources to use in this campaign. I am still detained. But I rely on the Truth to clear the way. With God’s mercy and the trust of our countrymen, I really don’t need anything else.
I know that at the end of this journey, there is victory.
